Streetscaping projects approved unanimously by council

Halifax Regional Council has passed recommendations from a staff report for $16-million in streetscaping projects for three streets downtown.

The projects on Argyle and Grafton streets will continue this coming August, while Spring Garden Road will see a nearly $10-million investment, with work expected to begin in 2019.

Metro Halifax reports the area between Queen and South park will include replacing the pavement, widening the sidewalks, as well as adding decorative lighting, trees and benches.

Councillor Tim Outhit said he would like to see the issue of aggressive panhandling in the Spring Garden-area tackled as it’s intimidating to people, but Mayor Mike Savage said he didn’t want to see a bylaw making it illegal.
