Ducharme to stay in QMJHL, signs on with Drummondville

Dominique Ducharme told NEWS 95.7 he’d forever have Halifax in his heart when he stepped down as head coach of the Mooseheads last week.

Now it looks like he’ll get to visit occasionally.

Ducharme is staying in the QMJHL, he’s just signed a 4-season contract as head coach and general manager of the Voltigeurs.

He is the winningest coach in the Herd’s history, leading the team to a Memorial Cup in 2013, and NEWS 95.7 play-by-play announcer John Moore told The Rick Howe Show, it won’t be long until he’s setting records in Drummondville.

“He’ll be the second fastest coach in Quebec league history to get to 200 wins, Patrick Roy was the first,” he explained. “Dom has 198 wins, it won’t take him long to get to 200.”

Moore thinks we’ll eventually see Ducharme in the NHL.

“He is professional to the core, his knowledge of the game, his ability to teach, the individual he is,” said Moore. “He’s respected, not just through his players, but well beyond that around the league.”

Drummondville is about a 90-minute drive from his family in Joliette, Quebec.

Ducharme left Halifax to be closer to his children.

The Mooseheads are currently searching for his replacement, and Moore thinks the team will have someone in place by early June.

“I think they’ll have a head coach in position by the time the draft unfolds in Charlottetown,” he said. “That will be an absolutely huge day for the hockey club, and I think they’ll want to have that out of the way by then.”

Moore said Ducharme’s quiet and confident coaching style will be missed in Halifax, but what he built here will continue on.

He added the head coach position for the Mooseheads is seen as one of the best across the CHL, and should attract some significant applicants.
