Frigid temperatures means warming centre will be open Friday morning

HALIFAX – As the temperatures sit below minus 15 with the windchill Friday morning, it has prompted the Mobile Outreach Street Health Program to open their warming centre on Gottingen Street.

Patty Melanson is the team lead and outreach nurse with MOSH and tells NEWS 95.7 those without a place to stay on Friday morning can come to the Johanna B. Oosterveld Centre between 8 a.m. and noon.

“It’s just a place to simply be out of the cold today,” Melanson said. “We’ll have some food there and if anyone needs help in securing a shelter bed for the night than we can certainly do that.”

Warm, dry and clean clothing is also available for those who come to the warming centre.

NEWS 95.7 meteorlogist Richard Zurawski said the temperatures are expected to stay about 5 degrees below normal for the weekend, and the days won’t be that bad, but the nights could get frigid.

“Once you get around minus 10 with some windchill then you start looking at frost bite, so the temperature is hovering tonight and tomorrow night around minus 10 to minus 15 degrees,” he explained. “It certainly could give you some frost bite if you’re not really dressed for it.”

He added we should also get about 5 centimetres of snow on Saturday.

Zurawski said if those who love to ski, sled or snowshoe should layer up and get out there this weekend while they can.

A low pressure system set to arrive Tuesday will bring rain along with mild temperatures between 8 and 10 degrees.
