RCMP TO ADDRESS MONCTON SHOOTINGS REPORT

The RCMP will provide an update today on efforts to implement recommendations stemming from the June 2014 shooting deaths of three Mounties in Moncton, N.B. It’s been just over a year since the force accepted all 64 recommendations in a report by retired assistant commissioner Alphonse MacNeil.

JIAN GHOMESHI SEX ASSAULT TRIAL CONTINUES

The trial of former CBC Radio host Jian Ghomeshi continues today in Toronto. The 48-year-old Ghomeshi has pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual assault, and one count of overcome resistance by choking. He acknowledged in 2014 that he engaged in rough sex acts, but said it was consensual.

BOSMA TRIAL RESUMES IN HAMILTON COURT

The trial of two men accused of killing Tim Bosma after going for a test drive in his truck continues today with more testimony from Crown witnesses. Dellen Millard, 30, of Toronto, and Mark Smich, 28, from Oakville, Ont., have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges in the death of the Hamilton man.

NEW QUEBEC LEGISLATIVE SESSION OPENS TODAY

A new legislative session in Quebec opens today as the governing Liberals seek to fulfil an election promise of creating 250,000 jobs. The province’s new economic minister, Dominique Anglade, has been tasked with coming up with a strategy to spur growth in Quebec. In late March, Premier Philippe Couillard’s government is expected to present a balanced budget.

THRONE SPEECH TODAY IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

British Columbia’s Liberal government will lay out its plans in a throne speech today. Premier Christy Clark says her government is returning to the legislature determined to stick to its big-picture goals of pursuing a liquefied natural gas industry and completing the $9-billion Site C hydroelectric dam. The throne speech comes just 15 months away from the next election.

PM TRUDEAU TO ATTEND ONTARIO BYELECTION RALLY

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to appear at a rally in Whitby, Ont., this evening in support of a Liberal candidate in an provincial byelection. Thursday’s byelection in Whitby-Oshawa was triggered after Progressive Conservative Christine Elliott resigned the seat, months after losing her party’s leadership race. Elizabeth Roy is running for the Liberals.

CANADIAN INVESTORS STAYING THE COURSE: POLL

Falling stock markets have not changed how most Canadian investors view their portfolios, a new poll suggests. The online poll released Tuesday and conducted for CIBC found that 58 per cent of people surveyed say they’re sticking with their long-term investment strategy despite the recent market volatility.
