Trudeau expected to lay out Canada’s future role in the fight against ISIL

OTTAWA – It’s expected that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will reveal today Canada’s future contribution in the fight against ISIS.

Trudeau is holding a news conference in Ottawa alongside his defence and international development ministers.

Trudeau said the Liberals would withdraw Canada’s fighter jets from the air campaign against ISIS and has not backed down despite calls from the opposition to rethink his decision.

Sources told The Canadian Press last month that the cabinet was considering a plan to dramatically beef up the number of advisers training the ground forces that are fighting Islamic State militants.

International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said last week that today’s announcement would include new aid funding.

She said Canada would remain a “significant donor in terms of humanitarian assistance.”
