RCMP arrest three men for airport luggage theft

GOFFS, N.S. – Three baggage handlers are facing charges alleged thefts occurred from luggage at Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

Nova Scotia RCMP say the handlers allegedly searched through checked baggage after it already had been loaded onto a plane on January 27.

Airport spokesperson Ashley Gallant says all three men passed security screening before being allowed to work as baggage handlers, but would not say what airline they worked for.

RCMP Corporal Andrew Joyce said the theft from passenger luggage is very concerning, and urges travellers to exercise caution when packing.

“We encourage travellers to always lock their luggage but be sure the key is easily accessible in the event you are asked to open your suitcase for security reasons,” said Joyce Wednesday.

Two 23-year-old men from Stewiacke and Dutch Settlement and one 19-year-old man from Halifax, were arrested Monday and RCMP say with more arrests and charges are expected.

All three men are scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on March 15.
