Government awaiting plan on Victoria General Hospital

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government says it will receive an initial plan in the coming days on the fate of the beleaguered Victoria General Hospital.

Health Minister Leo Glavine says the preliminary proposal will look at how to replace the Centennial and V-G buildings.

Glavine had asked his department and the health authority to provide the information by mid-January.

He says it would then be used as a foundation to produce a detailed plan on the future of the hospital.

Glavine says the challenge is in accommodating patients in both buildings, while decommissioning them.

But nurses, doctors and health administrators say the need to shut down the deteriorating site has become increasingly urgent.

The buildings have recently been hit by a series of floods, leaks, and heating problems, which have forced the relocation of patients and cancelled surgeries.

Glavine says other hospitals will be expanded, while some specialties could be decentralized to other hospitals outside the city.
