Man charged with murder in death of New Glasgow woman

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – Police have laid second-degree murder charges against a New Glasgow man in connection to the death of a 33-year-old woman whose body was found on Wednesday.

Nicole Campbell of Pictou County was found dead in a Temperance Street apartment around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after police received a 911 call to the residence.

A 36-year-old man was taken in to custody by New Glasgow Police Thursday morning in the same apartment building where Campbell’s body was found and was later charged with murder.

The Chronicle Herald has identified the suspect as Robert Jason Mackenzie, previously charged with assaulting a police officer in 2002. The Herald reports he was also charged with breaching the rules of probation and theft in 2003.

He has been remanded into custody and will make a first court appearance on Monday.

The cause of Campbell’s death has not been released and an autopsy was scheduled for Friday in Halifax.
