Glavine updates VG Hospital cleanup, floors two and three to re-open Monday

HALIFAX – The Intensive Care Unit in the Centennial building of the Victoria General Hospital should be back up and running by the end of the year, but the fourth and fifth floors heavily damaged by a September flood will not be re-opened until next year.

A burst pipe on the fifth floor of the building caused damaged on the second through fifth floors in September, with the most extensive damage occurring on the fourth and fifth floors.

Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine said Thursday that it’s still too early to get a total assessment of damages to the building because of the ongoing operations at the hospital, including the removal of asbestos.

The asbestos was released when water went through the ventilation system during the flood, which has also complicated matters and added to the cleanup.

The second and third floors will me handed back over to medicals teams on Monday.

Insurance is expected to cover the majority of the costs, but more money may be required to get the fourth and fifth floors in shape to hold patients, according to Glavine.

He said water and moisture concerns also has the insurance companies debating if they’re going to continue insuring certain pieces of equipment.
