City to install No Parking signs along Hollis Street bike lane

By

HALIFAX — The city wants to remind motorists it’s illegal to park in a bike lane.

To reinforce this message, more than two dozen “No Parking” signs are scheduled to be installed on Tuesday on left side of Hollis Street from Cogswell Street to Morris Street.

This comes after 239 tickets were issued to motorists parked in the bike lane between September 26 and October 8.

Eric Jonsson with the Halifax Cycling Coalition says the “No Parking” signs will help to educate people and raise awareness surrounding cycling safety and the rules surrounding designated bike lanes.

“It’s not like people are intentially trying to obstruct motorists. I think the signs will remind people it’s a bike lane, and they can’t park there. It’s a learning curve,” said Jonsson.

“We don’t want to have to ticket somebody for breaking a law they didn’t know existed. The “No Parking” signs are very clear.”

He adds he’s confident motorists will be receptive of the newly installed signs, adding clear signage will make it easier for everyone to share the road.
