Carrot Community Co-op set to close

HALIFAX – Carrot Community Co-op Grocery Store on Gottingen Street says it will be closing its doors because of financial reasons.

In an emailed message this morning that was sent to Carrot Community members, its cooperative board of directors says they came to the conclusion that the current business model was no longer financially viable.

The board says closing now will allow it to take time over the winter to explore the possibility of an alternative business model that may be viable.

“We are tremendously grateful for the support the carrot has received from the community,” the email read Friday.

“The Carrot has managed to bring together an incredible group of people who have worked to create something in their community that they care about and we are grateful to you for this opportunity.”

Its board has scheduled an upcoming members meeting on October 17th to provide members with a chance to discuss the closure of the grocery and talk about moving forward over in the months to come.

The Co-op originally opened in 2013, after winning money from the Aviva Community Fund.
