Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (13,978.66, up 110.31 points):

Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:PWT). Oil and gas. Up 34 cents, or 26.15 per cent, to $1.64 on 11.5 million shares.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 72 cents, or 6.52 per cent, to $11.76 on 8.6 million shares. A partnership led by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is snapping up Colorado oil and gas assets from Encana Corp. in the latest effort by the fund to grow its natural resources portfolio. The US$900 million cash deal includes nearly 21,000 hectares in the Denver Julesburg Basin, which at one time was a core part of Encana’s portfolio.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Up 55 cents, or 9.31 per cent, to $6.46 on 8.2 million shares.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Down 29 cents, or 3.28 per cent, to $8.56 on 7.7 million shares.

Bankers Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:BNK). Oil and gas. Up 39 cents, or 17.49 per cent, to $2.62 on 7.2 million shares.

Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B). Miner. Up 64 cents, or 7.20 per cent, to $9.53 on 6.4 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Iamgold Corp. (TSX:IMG). Miner. Down 13 cents, or 5.08 per cent, to $2.43 on 2.2 million shares. Iamgold Corp. will be reducing the workforce at one of its biggest mines by 10 per cent to reduce costs amid low gold prices. The cuts are at the Rosebel mining operations, which produced nearly one-third of Iamgold’s gold in 2014.
