Drivers asked to pay attention as kids head back to school today

HALIFAX – School buses return to City roads Wednesday morning, as high school students in the province have their first day of class.

You will also notice a heavier police presence.

Officers will be targeting drivers passing school buses while they’re stop lights are flashing, which carries a $410 fine and six demerit points for your first offence.

Cst. Tracy MacDonald with Halifax Regional Police said people may not be ready for more people and cars on the road, so he’s asking drivers to pay attention to the road on Wednesday morning.

“Everyone’s still sort of in summer vacation mode, and just be mindful the kids are starting back to school and we want everyone to get where they’re going safely,” MacDonald said.

Speeders will also be a target for officers, and MacDonald suggests going the speed limit or slightly under to help avoid a major tragedy.

“That gives you a little bit of extra time to put on the brakes, drivers should keep their head on a swivel and make sure they’re aware of their surroundings,” MacDonald said.

“Some of the kids are running late and they know it and they’re trying to catch up to their friends …. they may not see you and dart out in front of you.”

Elementary and Junior High Schools in the province will begin on Thursday.
