Classes at Brookside Junior High delayed due to mould

HALIFAX – Brookside Junior High School will not open for classes as scheduled on Thursday because of mould found in the building last week.

Classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept 7.

Staff returning to the Prospect Rd. school found mould on doors, ceiling tiles, furniture, as well as books and learning materials when they returned to work on Aug 24.

A cleaning crew will need the rest of the week to clean the building, and air quality tests will also be done as a precaution.

The mould is believed to have been caused by the humid weather over the past few weeks as the air exchanges were off for the summer in the building, causing moisture to accumulate.

Doug Hadley, spokesperson with Halifax Regional School Board, said mould was actually discovered at four or five schools in similar circumstances, but so far Brookside will be the only one that will have a delayed start to the school year.

Staff at Tantallon Junior Elementary School in Upper Tantallon also found mould when they returned to school, but officials are confident they’ll be ready for classes on Thursday.

High School students head back to school on Wednesday with elementary and junior highs returning to class on Thursday.

The exception is students at Southdale-North Woodside School and Central Spryfield Elementary who start on Friday.
