Mulcair makes campaign stop in Halifax

HALIFAX – NDP Leader Tom Mulcair was appealing to low-income seniors and the people who care for them as he made a campaign stop in Halifax on Sunday.

In a speech to supporters, Mulcair promised to reduce what he called “seniors poverty,” and said NDP government would spend $400 million per year to raise the Guaranteed Income Supplement, which benefits low-income seniors.

“They are our moms and our dads, these are our grandparents,” Mulcair told about 1,000 supporters at the World Trade and Convention Centre.

“These are they everyday heroes who worked hard and sought nothing more than to make their child’s lives better than their own.”

Mulcair took aim at the Liberals and Conservatives, saying the two parties have given up on addressing the issue of seniors poverty.

Mulcair also accused his Liberal counterpart of “giving up on Canadians” by refusing to commit to a balanced budget.
Justin Trudeau said his party would run small deficits in the short term to invest in infrastructure and boost the economy.

During his Halifax stop, Mulcair said balanced books are necessary to fund the social programs Canadians value.

Mulcair also refuted Conservative and Liberal claim the NDP’s economic plan has a multi-billion-dollar “hole” in it.
