Police warn of social networking app scam

Halifax Regional Police are reminding the public to use caution when communicating with strangers online.

They say over the last several months, they’ve received three reports from people who say they’ve been defrauded while using the social networking app WeChat.

Police explain the victims are asked to buy gift cards or online shopping credits and turn that information over in exchange for the promise to meet up for sexual services.

Once the scammer gets the information they need to use the cards or credits, they cut off contact.

Investigators are encouraging anyone who has been defrauded by this scam to not let embarrassment prevent them from contacting the Financial Crime Unit at 902-490-1985.

Police say silence only benefits the scammers.

In addition, police have issued the following tips to help keep safe while interacting online:

-Remember that whenever you contact or agree to meet someone online, you really don’t know who it is.
-Dating sites: Ensure you understand the privacy policy of the site and enable security features to protect your profile.
-Guard your identity: Remain anonymous until you feel comfortable disclosing more information.
-Never disclose personal information. Don’t provide your last name, address, workplace, phone number or any other identifying information when corresponding online.
-Never disclose credit card, banking information or any payment receipts that may have personal details such as PIN numbers.
-Don’t provide your address under the guise of receiving gifts or flowers.
