Changes to garbage pick up begin Saturday

HALIFAX – Changes to the Municipality’s household waste pick up begin on Saturday, with the biggest one seeing a change from dark bags to clear ones.

Households can now put out up to six clear bags every week, or five clear bags and one dark privacy bag starting on August 1.

Paper bags will now be used to hold yard waste but grass clippings will no longer be accepted.

Box Boards like cereal boxes will now go in with paper recycling and can go in either a grocery or clear bag.

Halifax Solid Waste Manager Matt Keliher tells News 95.7 the changes are intended to help us divert more waste from the landfill.

“Currently we’re looking at around 50 per cent of the waste that goes to the landfill can be diverted, either through the organic stream or the recycling stream,” Keliher said.

Food and paper are the biggest problems according to Keliher, as many ended up in the dump when they could be going elsewhere.

He said Halifax was the first city to bring in the green bin program for organic waste, and residents produce between 300 and 400 kg less waste per person than other cities across the country.

To help residents with their sorting questions, the Municipality released an app on Monday for smartphones.
