Black finishes 5-for-5 at Pan Am Games

Ellie Black’s neck is probably sore this morning, suffering from the strain of wearing the 5 medals she picked up at Toronto’s Pan Am Games.

The Halifax gymnast added two golds to her medal count yesterday after nailing her balance beam routine at the highest difficulty level, Black followed that up with a gold in floor exercise.

The 19-year-old also picked up a bronze in the vault, a silver in the team event and became the first Canadian in 36-years to win gold in the all-around.

Black said she couldn’t be happier with her Pan Am experience.

“I was not expecting it, I was just going out there to enjoy and get this experience which is a great stepping stone for Gymnastics Canada moving towards the World Championships,” she said.

She said she entered the games intending only to do her best, Black went 5-for-5, winning a medal in every Pan Am event she competed in.

The Halifax-native said gymnastics is making a comeback in this country, and Canada is now a force to be reckoned with.

Black also thanked the crowd at Canada House for all of the support.

“This has been incredible,” she said. “Thank you so much for coming out and cheering us on, keep cheering on our Canadian athletes.”

All of Ellie’s events are over, and now the 19-year-old plans to relax and enjoy time with family and friends.
