Atlantic provinces agree to standardize apprenticeships in region

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Atlantic provinces have signed an agreement aimed at making it easier for apprentices to have their training recognized across the region.

Leaders from the four provinces made the announcement at a meeting of the Council of Atlantic Premiers in Charlottetown on Sunday.

New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant says the current apprenticeship system makes it difficult for some workers to have their training and experience recognized across provinces.

Gallant says the agreement will standardize the system and allow apprentices to work throughout Atlantic Canada.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil says training hours completed in one Atlantic province will now be recognized in the entire region.

McNeil says he hopes the regional agreement will help set a new standard for the country, and says it will be on the agenda when premiers from across Canada meet in Newfoundland in July.
