Looking back on the Moncton shooting one year later

It’s been one year since the Moncton shooting that left three RCMP officers dead, and two others wounded.

A call came in the evening of June 4, 2014, and less than an hour later, Constables Douglas Larche, Fabrice Gevaudan and Dave Ross were dead.

RCMP officer Damien Theriault held back tears as he addressed the media the day after the shootings.

“While responding to a call of an armed man in the North end of the city of Moncton, three of Codiac RCMP’s officers were shot and killed,” he said.

The city was on lockdown for nearly thirty hours while the manhunt was on for the killer. Justin Bourque surrended to police late the next evening.

Moncton mayor George LeBlanc says it was a scary time for his city.

“I don’t want to say that it’s taken away a sense of innocence, but I think it makes us realize that if this kind of thing can happen here in Moncton, it can happen anywhere,” he said.

Bourque pleaded guilty in August to three counts of first degree murder, and was sentenced in October to life in prison with no parole for 75 years.
