Egoyan’s ‘Die Walkure’ leads pack for Dora awards with nine nominations

TORONTO – The opera “Die Walkure,” directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan, is the leading contender for this year’s Dora Mavor Moore Awards.
The Canadian Opera Company production is up for nine trophies, including best production and best direction for Egoyan.
Several productions have eight nominations apiece, including the 1920s Manhattan tale “The Wild Party” and “Spoon River,” which is based on Edgar Lee Masters’ poems.
Also netting eight nominations apiece are the plays “Tom at the Farm” and “Blood Wedding,” as well as the opera “Falstaff.”
The musical “Once” got seven nominations, including best production.
The annual awards are presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts and celebrate excellence in the Toronto’s theatre, dance and opera.
This year’s awards ceremony will take place June 22 with comedian Gavin Crawford as host.
