Taxi association shocked by sexual assault allegations

Halifax taxi drivers say they are shocked to hear that charges of sexual assault have been laid against one of their own.

39-year-old Bassam Aladin Al-Rawi was arrested over the weekend in connection with an alleged sexual assault inside a cab in the south end of the city.

Dave Buffet, president of the Halifax Taxi Drivers Owners Association, told News 95.7, when an allegation like this is made against a driver, that person’s taxi licence is immediately suspended.

“Cab drivers are actually guilty until proven innocent,” he said. “Unless he is found not guilty, he will not get his licence back under any circumstance”

Buffet urges passengers getting into any taxi to check the 3 digit number on the vehicle’s roof light, and report any kind of inappropriate behaviour to police or to the city’s 311 line immediately.

He said knowing that number also comes in handy if for those who leave an item in the cab.
