Teen sentenced for role in leaving threatening message at Cape Breton mall

SYDNEY, N.S. – A teenage girl has been sentenced to six months of house arrest for her role in planting a false message that suggested five gunmen had descended on a shopping mall in Sydney, N.S.

The 16-year-old from Glace Bay and a 16-year-old male co-accused both pleaded guilty to conveying a false message, which was left in a stockroom at Sydney’s Mayflower Mall last December.

The boy was supposed to be sentenced Wednesday, but his lawyer was granted an adjournment until next month.

The girl was also sentenced to 16 months on probation and she has been ordered to perform 200 hours community service work.

Merchants say the mall was shut down for four hours, resulting in $200,000 in lost sales.
