Province urges Nova Scotians to plan ahead during Emergency Preparedness Week

It’s Emergency Preparedness Week in Nova Scotia.

Sean Irvine, director of operations at the province’s Emergency Management Office told News 95.7 the goal is to help people get ready for the worst case scenario.

“It’s an opportunity for them to focus on the types of strategies they can personally undertake to make their lives easier in a weather event or other disaster,” he said.

Irvine said this includes a number of things, such as preparing for a power outage or medical needs that might arise.

“Taking care of their pets, and taking care of their extending family, looking in on their neighbours,” said Irvine. “That’s the kind of advice we’ve been pushing a lot this past year, especially over the winter, is for people to check in on their elderly neighbours.”

Part of the week includes a twitter chat with emergency management coordinators across Nova Scotia hosted by EMO Minister Mark Furey.

“Some of the fire departments are going to be there with the police and Nova Scotia Power,” said Irvine. “Red Cross and Environment Canada will be on the twitter chat, along with Public Safety Canada.”

That goes Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, tweeters can join in by using the #epweek hashtag.
