Neptune Theatre partnership could save Khyber

The fate of Barrington Street’s Khyber building is back on the table at city council today, and a new partnership may be able to save the building.

Emily Davidson with Friends of the Khyber said her group, along with the Khyber Arts Society, starting meeting with Neptune Theatre in the fall.

The groups have found common ground on their vision for the future of the iconic downtown building.

“They definitely have an organizational capacity that neither Friends of the Khyber … or Khyber Arts Society, which is a small artist run centre, have,” said Davidson.

Downtown councillor Waye Mason will put forward a motion at today’s council meeting to give Neptune some time to come up with a report on what they’d like to do with the building.

“It’s kind of the perfect partnership,” said Mason. “Neptune has the experience in running buildings, funding and maintenance, and has the interest in the arts.”

Mason thinks council will be open to learning more about the groups’ plans for the building, and said the matter will be back before council in either late summer or early fall.

The Barrington Street fixture had been slated to be sold off as surplus last year.
