Ehlers Game 7 overtime goal sends Mooseheads to next round of playoffs

It was a big win for the Halifax Mooseheads last night.

After playing to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation in Game 7 in Shawinigan, a goal from Nikolaj Ehlers late in the 1st overtime period ended the series and the season for the Cataracts.

News 95.7’s John Moore says it was a nail-biter.

“Three minutes to go in the overtime period, you’re starting to wonder if we’re going to a second overtime period as we did in Game 5,” said Moore.  “Ehlers wasn’t at top speed, but he caught Cupper off guard.”

Philippe Gadoury scored with 2:03 left in the third period to force extra time for the Mooseheads, while Maxime Fortier had a goal in the first period. Eric Brassard made 36 saves for the win.

Dennis Yan and Olivier Caouette replied for Shawinigan, while Marvin Cupper stopped 44 shots.

Neither team could score on the power play. Halifax went 0 for 1, while the Cataractes were 0 for 2 with the man advantage.

With the win, the Herd will advance to the second round of the Q-league playoffs, where they will face a long-time rival.

“It will be the Moncton Wildcats, the series will get underway on Friday night,” said Moore.  “Games 1 and 2 at the Coliseum in Moncton, and then the Mooseheads will be back home.”

Moore says because there isn’t a great distance between the two cities, the series will not be a 2-3-2 format.

He says Games 3 and 4 will be in Halifax, then if necessary, Game 5 will in Moncton, Game 6 back here on home ice, then Game 7 returns to Moncton.

The first two home games are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Round 2 playoff ticket packages go on sale for season ticket & 15-pack holders this morning at 11 a.m. at the Ticket Atlantic Box Office until Thursday, April 9th at 5 p.m.

Individual tickets for the general public for Games 3 and 4 will go on sale Friday, April 10th at 10 a.m.
