Drivers banned for life can get licence back after 10-years

As of today, Nova Scotians who have had their drivers licenses permanently revoked because of an impaired driving charge, can now apply to get them reinstated.

Those hoping to use the ‘Faint Hope Clause’ will be subject to strict criteria, including having to use an interlock system for at least 5-years.

They can’t try to get their licence back until after they been banned from driving for at least 10-years.

The province estimates 86 people will be eligible to apply.

Other changes to the Motor Vehicle Act taking effect today will mean new drivers are required to have a blood alcohol level of zero for two years after passing the “newly licensed phase” of the graduated licence program.

Drivers must also now wait two years after the “newly licensed phase” before they can supervise a new driver.
