Former colleagues remember Allan Rowe as dedicated journalist and politician

Liberal MLA and former broadcaster Allan Rowe is being remembered by friends and colleagues.

Rowe died yesterday after being hospitalized late last month for an aneurysm.

The 58-year-old Dartmouth South MLA had a long career in journalism before becoming a politician.

He spent 17-years at Global News, much of that behind the anchor desk.

Ron Kronstein sits behind that desk now, and remembers Rowe as a kind and optimistic man.

“A good reporter, a good solid human being and always had a great sense of humour and a great personality,” said Kronstein.  “I couldn’t really say anything bad about Allan, because it just didn’t exist.”

After leaving broadcasting behind and becoming a politician, Kronstein said Rowe served his community.

“I would hazard to say that he was probably the most visible and the busiest of all the MLAs,” he said.  “He was out every night doing something for everyone, and I’ve never heard anyone say a bad thing about him.”

While Rowe was news director at Global, he hired Nick Logan, who now works for Global National out of Vancouver.

Logan remembers Rowe cared about his audience when he worked in news, and that trait carried on into his political career.

“I don’t know that he necessarily wanted to be that major rising star, that wanted to be Prime Minister, I think he literally just wanted to serve his community,” he said.

Logan took to Twitter to thank Allan for giving him his first break in journalism, and told News 95.7 he’ll be sad to not be able to meet Rowe for a coffee the next time he’s in Halifax.
