Viral Downtown Halifax promo video is a blast from the past

A video promoting Downtown Halifax has gone viral, and, it’s got a very distinct 80s flavour.

The Downtown Halifax Business Commission’s Brendan Sommerhalder said the idea is to remind viewers of simpler times in the dating world.

“It’s sort of a throwback from the 1980s, when the way that people were dating and finding each other wasn’t through OkCupid, but was through VHS — taping each other and exchanging them through mail.”

The goal was to drive web traffic, while also selling date packages for Downtown Halifax.

The video has gone viral, with some 90,000 views, and has been featured in the Huffington Post and on Mashable.

Sommerhalder said it’s a success.

“We generated a lot of traffic to the website, which is what we were hoping to do, and sold more packages than projected.”

Sommerhalder said more videos are on the way, so stay tuned.
