Nova Scotia tourism says service cuts will save over $1 million a year

Two visitor information centres will not reopen this year and seven provincial parks in Nova Scotia will switch to self-service as part of a program review that will save more than $1 million a year by 2016.

The changes will affect 58 seasonal staff, 38 at the parks and 20 at the visitor information centres.

The Tourism Department says the visitor information centres in Pictou and Digby are being closed because they are near other locally run centres and are not cost-effective.

Patrick Sullivan, CEO of the Nova Scotia Tourism Agency, says visits to tourist information centres dropped by almost 40 per cent over the last decade as people use online information to plan trips.

The changes at the parks will see tourists use pay stations.
