JL Ilsley High reopens as four schools remain closed

Class is back in session at JL Ilsley High School.

The building reopens today after being closed due of water damage caused by a leaking roof.

Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley told News 95.7 they’ve replaced up to 250 ceiling tiles at the school and have taken air samples.

“We would absolutely not put a student, or a teacher, or anyone in that school if we thought it was unhealthy,” said Hadley.

Hadley said he spent an hour going through the building yesterday with some members of the student council so they could see the improvements themselves.

He added over 60 schools in their system have been dealing with roof leaks over the last week from ice and snow buildup.

“Some have been relatively minor and have caused very minimal disruption,” said Hadley.  “Others have resulted in having to move classes, or close a gym for a day or two, or in some cases as we’ve seen, close some schools.”

Four schools remain closed today:

-Astral Drive Junior High,

-Beechville-Lakeside-Timberlea Senior Elementary,

-Five Bridges Junior High

-St. Catherine’s Elementary

They are all expected to reopen Monday.
