Argyle Street pilot project gets committee go-ahead

A pilot project is moving ahead that would make Argyle Street free of curbs and sidewalks.

HRM’s transportation standing committee has voted in favour of a recommendation for council to approve the experiment.

The Downtown Halifax Business Commission hired the Planning and Design Centre to draft the plan a few years ago in connection with the $50-million revitalization plan for the downtown core.

Executive director Paul MacKinnon tells Metro Halifax the plan allows pedestrians to roam on the side of the street or in the middle, adding vehicles will still be able to use the space.

The city staff report says the design reduces car-pedestrian collisions.

The pilot project is scheduled to run for six weeks this spring or summer, at a cost of $40-thousand.
