New law to determine health care union representation in Nova Scotia

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government will determine which union will represent nurses, support and clerical workers in the health-care system after an arbitrator failed to make a decision.

Health Minister Leo Glavine says James Dorsey determined representation for only one of the four bargaining units being created under legislation that amalgamates the province’s health authorities on April 1.

Glavine says legislation will determine which unions represent the remaining three bargaining units.

The government says Dorsey’s ruling only determined that the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union should represent the health-care bargaining unit.

In the case of nurses, Dorsey report released today says no union has a majority of the employees in the same type of bargaining unit when the province’s health authorities are reduced from 10 to two.

The government wants to cut the number of bargaining units from 50 to four, which affects 24,000 workers in the health-care system.
