Streets flooding; closures, cancellations piling up as winter storm hits Halifax

The city says it’s dealing with major flooding in Halifax.

They point to the following streets as being particularly bad: Bedford Highway, Barrington Street, including severe flooding at the intersection with Inglis Street, Quinpool road near Horseshoe Island and the Armdale Rotary, Oxford Street at the intersections of Jubilee Road and Coburg Road, Thornhill Drive and the surrounding subdivision in Spryfield, Northwest Arm Drive, and Cole Harbour Road between Forest Hills Parkway and Caldwell Road. Any low-lying area in the city could be flooded right now.

It’s best to stay home today as closures and cancellations pile up all over the city.

Due to the storm, Halifax Transit has suspended bus and ferry services for the rest of the day.

The winter parking ban is bring enforced tonight. Secure off-street parking between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. on all city streets.

The Rogers Hometown Hockey event scheduled for today at Cole Harbour Place has been cancelled due to extreme weather conditions.

The Rogers Hometown Hockey broadcast on CityTV will proceed as planned, with Cole Harbour remaining front and centre as part of the storytelling and celebration.

All city recreation centres and hockey rinks are closed today.

The Emera Oval is closed, and the status of the 4 and 7 p.m. public skates will be reevaluated later today.

All Halifax Public Library locations are closed today.

Mount Saint Vincent University is closed, so are both Dalhousie campuses: Halifax and Truro.

Today’s Halifax Rainmen game has been postponed till tonight at 7 p.m. — doors will open at 6 p.m.

Neptune Theatre’s 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. performances of ‘The 39 Steps’ are cancelled.

The Halifax Seaport Market is closed today.

The Discovery Centre is also closed today.

Several flights have been cancelled at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, check http://flyhalifax.com/ for more details.

The LaHave ferry service has also been suspended.

Mic Mac Mall, Sunnyside Mall and the Halifax Shopping Centre are all closed today.

Blizzard conditions have shut down both Martock and Wentworth ski resorts.

Several other businesses have also closed, it you have plans today, it’s best to call ahead.
