Acadia dealing with meningitis outbreak

All Acadia University students are going to be offered a free meningitis vaccine over the next two weeks.

The decision comes as Public Health confirmed today that the strain of the illness that the second diagnosed student at Acadia has matches up with the strain that killed another Acadia student earlier this month.

Executive director of Student Services, James Sanford, said students are remaining objective about the whole situation.

“The risk is low, and so our students are gathering that information, they are asking questions, and we have scheduled a number of information sessions involving Public Health officials where students have the opportunity to ask questions and get more information.”

Sanford said the immunization clinics will take place on campus, and added that all Acadia students have already been notified with details via email.

He said students leaving town for Reading Week will be able to get vaccinated once they return.
