Snow cleanup continues in wake of another big storm

It’s another day off for many students across the province today, but for snow-clearing crews across the region, the storm’s aftermath is making for a very busy day of work.

Superintendent of Halifax’s snow operations, Darrin Natolino, told the Rick Howe Show there’s been several issues they’ve run into lately — including lack of snow storage space, ineffective salt on thick ice, and complications with sidewalk plowing versus street plowing.

“It’s a difficult job to keep the sidewalks clear, especially when you have back-to-back storms,” he said. “So, it basically becomes a fight between the street plow — he has to push his snow somewhere — and the sidewalk plow — he has to push the snow somewhere [too].”

News 95.7’s meteorologist Richard Zurawski said it’s snowed in Halifax every day so far this month.

“It’s been very, very unusual,” he said. “These low pressure systems are marching up because the jet stream’s pushing way up to the north, and they are guided by the jet stream and that allows them to move across Eastern Canada.”

Fortunately, Zurawski said the weekend is looking relatively calm, but remember to get those vehicles off the streets tonight — the municipality will be enforcing the winter parking ban from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.
