Slick roads create dangerous driving conditions across Halifax

Folks in Halifax may have dug themselves out of the snow, but another problem now seems to be plaguing people in the city.

Regional Police said ice is covering just about every street in Halifax, and are urging drivers to slow down.

“[There were] several collisions all over the city, but mostly, it’s vehicles sliding off the roads,” said Const. Pierre Bourdages. “It appears that people don’t realize the roads are still ice-covered.”

To add to the commuter chaos, Halifax Water is fixing a water main that broke this morning on Windsor St. near Connaught.

The utility’s James Campbell said its added more frozen water to the roads.

“There certainly will be some slippery conditions, so we ask people to drive slowly, ” he said. “It is a work zone, so if they could drive slowly or try and avoid the area, that would be the best thing.”

Campbell said he’s not sure what caused the break, and added that crews will likely be repairing it all day.

“Once crews start to dig, they’ll uncover exactly what the problem is, and then we’ll know from there what the repair will be. But, how many homes are out [of service] right now? I don’t know.”
