Halifax gearing up for multi-day hockey celebration

A celebration of Canada’s favourite game is coming to Halifax.

Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada runs from February 11-15, 2015.

The mayor is getting excited, Mike Savage said the event will be great expose for Halifax, and the city is certainly ready to host a big event like this.

“We’ve had the World Juniors here years ago, we’ve had the Women’s World Hockey, we’ve had lots of big events here in Halifax over the years,” said Savage.

He said he’s excited for the country to see Halifax from a different point of view.

Savage was joined in his office yesterday by former NHL player and now best-selling author, Theo Fleury who was in town promoting his new book “Conversations with a Rattlesnake,” co-written with therapist Kim Barthel, about detailing his struggles with addiction.

Fluery said events like Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada and Rogers Hometown Hockey are a great ways for the NHL to give back to the fans.

“Without the great hockey fans in Canada, Halifax being one of those places, there is no NHL, there is no Theo Fleury,” he said.

The five days of festivities begins February 11th with an opening ceremony at the Halifax Forum.

Other events include a skate with The Stanley Cup, live music and a celebrity luncheon.

On Saturday, February 14, the Emera Oval will be the centre of the action with host Ron MacLean.

Screens will be set up to show NHL games all day long, there will be clinics with former NHL players, ice sculptors, and The Stanley Cup on display.

News 95.7’s The Rick Howe Show will also be broadcasting live on-site.

On Sunday, the action moves to the hometown of Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon for Rogers Hometown Hockey.

Ron MacLean will host an NHL broadcast live from Cole Harbour Place from the Sportsnet Mobile Studio.

There will be live music, hockey alumni and broadcast of the game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks.

News 95.7 will also be there, with a live broadcast of The Sheldon MacLeod Show.

A full list of events can be found on the city’s website.

Rogers is the parent company of News 95.7.
