Storm cleanup continues in wake of wintry weather

It may not have been the snowpocalypse, but yesterday’s wintery weather certainly left its mark on the Maritimes.

According to News 95.7’s meteorologist, Richard Zurawski, some parts of Halifax saw snowfall amounts of up to 20 centimetres, and in southwestern parts of the province, they saw double that.

“The storm was a bit weaker than we thought it would be, but the duration was pretty much on,” he said. “Temperatures were a little different as well. We never did peak into the plus range all that much, in most areas we stayed in the minus range.”

Zurawski said wind gusts in the metro region reached about 75 kilometres an hour, and over in Yarmouth, gusts peaked at 84 kilometres an hour.

“Well, it started out on the cold side at minus 10 or 12 degrees, but it hovered around minus four degrees, and right now we’ve got a freezing rain warning in effect, because the temperature is staying below the freezing mark.”

The good news is that Zurawski doesn’t see another major weather event in our immediate future, but said we can expect some more of the white stuff this weekend.

“I don’t know when the next big snowfall’s going to happen, but we will get some snowfall on Saturday. Right now, we’re probably looking at five to 10 centimetres of snow.”

Yesterday’s wintery weather caused nearly the whole province to shut down as schools, offices and even ski hills closed up shop while the storm blasted its way through the region.
