Blizzard causes cancellations and closures

The first major snow event of the year will not pack as big a punch as first thought.

News 95.7’s meteorologist Richard Zurawski said in the lead-up to the storm, all of the computer models were showing that the storm’s centre would make landfall in Nova Scotia.

Zurawski said a high pressure system that was located over the province yesterday held up longer than anticipated and that moved the storm’s track to the East.

“I’m thinking if we get 20 centimetres that will be lots,”  said Zurawski.

Superintendent of winter operations, Darrin Natolino, told the Rick Howe Show over 200 plows and trucks have been out all day clearing roads of the slippery snow, slush and ice.

“We prioritize our routes, and this is what we do,” he said. “We are out there doing the best we can, and hopefully, within a day or so, we’ll all be talking about the storm that came and went.”

Nova Scotia Power senior communications advisor, Beverley Ware, said over 300 power line technicians, tree-trimmers and supervisors have been out trying to restore power to over a thousand customers across the province.

“If you have downed power line in your area, or if you have trees or branches that have fallen on lines, we ask that you call us as soon as it’s safe for you to do so.”

Halifax Regional Municipality will be enforcing the overnight winter parking ban, but they remind residents that under Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, cars blocking snow removal or winter maintenance operations can be ticketed or towed at any time of day.
