Sackville High student dies of “serious illness”

Staff and students at Sackville High School are mourning the loss of one of their own.

A Grade 10 student who was hospitalized last week after contracting meningococcal meningitis has passed away.

Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley said the school has brought in grief councillors to help staff and students.

“What we want to do is provide supports at the school to be able to speak with students and staff if they’re struggling,” said Hadley.

He said Sackville High students are writing exams this week, and if necessary those who are unable to write because of the tragedy will be given an opportunity at a later date.

“There may be some students who don’t feel they can even come to school, there might be some students who feel they can, and then find that they can’t write,” said Hadley. “Everyone grieves in different ways.”

Hadley said when a student dies from an illness it is concerning, but no additional measures are being taken at this point.

A statement posted on the school’s website Monday morning and attributed to administrator John Miller said the student died of a “serious illness,” and advised parents to “be prepared to allow your child to express his/her thoughts and feelings or to discuss this loss with you.”
