Cole Harbour triple-shooting suspect to return to court next month

The eldest suspect charged in the Nov. 30 Cole Harbour shooting will be back in court on Feb. 27 to enter a plea.

Crown attorney James Giacomantonio said until then, Downey will remain at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside.

“He’s been remanded, and he will remain in custody unless he seeks bail. And, at this point, he’s not seeking bail.”

Downey, who is also a gold medal boxer, pleaded not guilty to two other gun-related incidents today in court — one dating back to June 3, the other from July 1.

“He set down two of the matters for trial,” said Giacomantonio. “An incident in June was set down for a two-day trial, and an incident in July was set down for a two-day trial.”

Downey is facing three counts of attempted murder following the violent Cole Harbour home invasion late last year that sent three teens to hospital, leaving one young woman paralyzed from the chest down.

“It’s a fairly significant investigation, so, there are a lot of different witnesses and police witnesses.”

Three other shooting suspects — all aged 17 — are facing charges as well.

They are being dealt with in Halifax Youth Court.
