Education review recommendations may clash with teachers’ union

A list of 30 recommendations was released yesterday with the first educational review the province has done in 25 years.

Some of the report’s recommendations included better alignment between a teacher’s qualifications and what they teach, as well as mandatory performance appraisals.

Education Minister Karen Casey told News 95.7 some of the changes will likely clash with the collective agreement.

“I think what the report is saying is, if there are teachers whose performance is not acceptable and they’ve gone through the performance appraisal process with their board, then the board needs to look at whether they’re terminated or not.”

Union president Shelley Morse said any changes around seniority provisions would have to be negotiated.

“Well, it’s in our contract, so I can’t speak about what we would do with articles in our contract until we are at the negotiating table.”

Morse said it’s too early to say what the recommended changes may mean for issues such as performance.

A main message from the review shows about fifty per cent of Nova Scotians think the school system could be better.
