Tenants removed from ‘unsafe’ Gottingen Street building

About a half dozen people are out of their homes in a building after it was deemed unsafe.

A city compliance officer delivered the news to the tenants of 2179 Gottingen Street yesterday.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Stairs said a recent inspection revealed electrical, structural and fire code issues at the building.

Courtney Marshall Sylliboy lives in the building and told News 95.7 she was woken up yesterday morning by Halifax Police telling her she had two hours to pack up her stuff and leave.

She said she has noticed issues with the building since she moved in October 1st.

“Some days the lights would work, some days they wouldn’t,” she said.  “We didn’t have heat up there, the bathroom floor on the second floor was completely rotted out.”

She added her place also had a rodent problem, saying she’s had to kill 7 mice since in the month she’s lived there.

The owner has been ordered to repair the building, while the tenants have been put in touch with Community Services officials.
