Canoe getaway suspect to appear in court this morning

A 20-year-old man will appear in court this morning to face several charges, after a desperate flee from a break and enter scene yesterday afternoon on the Northwest Arm.

Halifax Police Sgt. Greg Robertson said nearby residents had spotted the suspect with a sword after he broke into homes, hopped in a canoe, and tried to get away.

“The suspect eventually got into a canoe, we later determined was taken from another residence. At that point, he launched the canoe into the Northwest Arm and he attempted to paddle away.”

The man’s getaway attempt didn’t go according to plan, and police arrested him shortly after he made his way back to shore.

“I’m guessing that once he heard the sirens coming or saw the police vehicles, he probably realized that, given the area he was in, there’s only a few exit areas on land once you’re down at the Dingle Park.”

The suspect will be in Halifax Provincial Court later this morning.

He’s charged with a handful of offences, including theft under $5000, possession of housebreaking tools, resisting arrest and two counts of break and enter.
