Union urges health minister to keep committment on PTSD support for first responders

A union representing a number of different first-responder groups in the province is urging the health minister to keep his word on post-traumatic stress disorder.

An opposition bill was introduced earlier this year that is designed to improve access to support services for those suffering from PTSD, and during that process, Leo Glavine said he would form a legislative committee to take a look at the issue.

NSGEU second vice president Kelly Murphy told News 95.7 they want the minister to live up to that promise.

“That hasn’t been done yet, so we’re just asking the minister to keep his word and his promise of setting up his committee to look into it further, because changes need to happen.”

Murphy said first responders have trouble accessing worker’s compensation when they are diagnosed with PTSD and that makes an already-stressful situation even worse.

She said they are also looking for additional support structures for workers who return to work after dealing with PTSD.
