Council moves ahead with controversial condo development plans

Halifax Regional Council is moving forward with a controversial development in the south end of the city.

The proposed project for Wellington St. would include two multi-unit residential high rises — one would be eight stories high, the other would be 10.

City planners had recommended refusing the project’s application, noting the height of the buildings, and adding they would cover 75 per cent of the property, among other things.

Coun. Waye Mason is also not in favour of the development, saying more than 100 people who attended a public information session oppose the towers.

Despite all of this, council has given first reading to changes to the municipal planning strategy and land-use bylaws to allow the project to go ahead.

Council has also scheduled a public hearing.
