Man arrested downtown, firearm recovered

Halifax Regional Police dealt with two gun-related incidents Thursday.

They confirmed having arrested a 25-year-old man on Argyle Street and recovering a firearm on a nearby Halifax Transit bus.

Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Pierre Bourdages told News 95.7 the arrest was made at 11:08 a.m. near Argyle Street and Carmichael Street.

“A firearm was found on a Metro Transit bus, allegedly having been left there by an individual who had just left the bus,” said Bourdages.

Bourdages told News 95.7, “it’s too early to determine if the incident from this morning and this one are connected in any way.”

Just after 8:30 a.m. police received one call from a resident saying they spotted someone in the Duke and Brunswick area carrying a rifle wrapped in a black cloth.

Bourdages said no shots were fired, and it’s possible what the caller saw wasn’t really a gun.

“Sometimes individuals are seeing what they think is a firearm, but may turn out not to be a firearm,” he said.

The suspect was described to police as being a man wearing black cargo pants and an ear piece.

“It’s still a very fluid situation,” he said Thursday afternoon. “We still have a large number of officers downtown looking at these two matters, and really, they want to make sure if they are the same incident involving the same individual, this is what it is, and if they are separate, that we can determine that as well.”

Bourdages said in the wake of what happened in Ottawa Wednesday, he’s been fielding calls from all over the country about today’s incidents. He said the large police response today had nothing to do with that event though.

“If we had a report before about the events in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Ottawa about someone carrying a weapon downtown, the response would’ve been the same,” he said.

Anyone with information about today’s incidents is urged to contact police at 902-490-5020 or Crime Stoppers.
