Lawsuit filed over CHL wages

A class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of junior hockey players in Canada that suggests that they have not been paid fairly for years.

Lawyer Ted Charney filed the suit on Friday seeking $180-million in back wages, overtime, and punitive damages.

Charney said he wants a judge’s ruling on the employment relationship that players have with their clubs.

“We’re asking the judge to decide whether or not the relationship between the teams and the players is an employer/employee relationship. If it is, then it follows that, the teams have to comply with minimum wage legislation.”

Charney said he doesn’t buy the rationale that the players are student-athletes who receive free education when they are done playing, and added that a scholarship does not exempt employers from having to pay a legislated minimum wage.
