Flu shot campaign kicks off in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia Health Minister Leo Glavine rolled up his sleeve today at the province’s flu shot campaign launch, and led by example.

“I’m going to get my flu shot here today, and I invite all Nova Scotians to join me in taking this simple step to stay healthy this flu season,” he said to dozens of onlookers at the IWK.

With flu season just around the corner, the province is urging people of all ages to get the vaccine, including children and seniors, as well as high-risk groups.

IWK Director of Women’s and Newborn Health, Michelle LeDrew, said an emphasis is being put on this year’s main target — pregnant women.

“Our first priority is to ensure that mom and babe stay healthy, through pregnancy and birth,” she said.

Glavine said the vaccination is a free, safe and effective way to protect yourself from influenza.

“It sends thousands of Nova Scotians to doctors’ offices and emergency departments every year, and that’s where the real expense to the health care system needs to be prevented,” he said.

Last year, 42 per cent of Nova Scotians were immunized against the flu.
